Pedestrian Mobility Switzerland welcomes the decision of the Zurich District Council to uphold the appeal by Pedestrian Mobility Switzerland and other organizations (Fussgängerverein Zürich and the Swiss Federation of the Blind and Visually Impaired – Zurich and Schaffhausen Section) against provisions of the new Parking Permit Ordinance. The District Council stated that the City of Zurich is not authorized to allow company vehicles to be parked on sidewalks generally and city-wide. In doing so, it confirms a central principle of federal law: sidewalks are reserved for pedestrians.
The decision is an important signal for safety and the quality of public spaces. People walking, especially those with visual impairments, people in wheelchairs, the elderly, and adults with strollers or children, rely on barrier-free and accessible sidewalks.

The District Council’s decision strengthens this cause and confirms that pedestrian traffic can’t be restricted without a clear legal basis.
