Children

and play

Serving young people today to shape tomorrow

A street frequented by unaccompanied children is a sign of a safe and equitable public space.

Three levers contribute to children's independent mobility:

  • Safety first: A safe route to school is part of the right to education. Acceptability criteria define whether a child can reasonably be expected to walk to school or whether measures are needed to make the journey safer.
  • More than just a path: The journey to school is an essential part of a child’s social, motor, and cognitive development. Children should also be able to play outdoors in their neighborhoods and walk to their activities from an early age.
  • Playing in the street: Playing is permitted everywhere on side roads that allow it. Zones 30, “zones de rencontre” or pedestrianized streets are ideal bases for children and adults to play and move around in front of their homes.
