Representation at the United Nations

UNECE’s Global Forum for Road Traffic Safety

In partnership with the International Pedestrian Federation (IFP), we represent the interests of pedestrians at the UNECE Global Forum for Road Traffic Safety (WP.1). WP.1 is the only permanent UN body dedicated to improving road safety. Its primary task is to monitor UN legal instruments for the harmonization of traffic regulations, such as:

  • Convention on Road Traffic
  • Convention on Road Signs and Signals

Other recently discussed topics include:

  • Impact of the introduction of automated vehicles on road safety
  • “Safe Systems” approach
  • Revisions to the Convention on Road Signs and Signals

Promoting walking

National and regional strategies

More and more countries, regions, and cities are adopting strategies to promote walking, such as masterplans or pedestrian plans or walking strategies,

In Switzerland, discussions are under way. We are committed to seeing a national walking strategy put in place.
